The Kitchen Table.... 10 March 2015

Things were going along pretty good, I thought. Everything was normal in everyday life.

But.... how could I not notice that the days were passing by so fast now, that it was getting harder to keep up.   One day blended into the next..... then a whole week had gone by......and then two.....and then a month.

Why was this, I wondered?  What's so different about the days we're living in now?  Twenty years ago it wasn't like this.  But today, the brushstrokes of news and information bombard us fast and at a fever pitch with no time for time to think about what's happening to our world.....or to us.

In a pensive mood, I began to reflect.

Thinking back, it was easy to recall those times when friends and family got together. It was a natural thing.  Pulling up a chair and sitting down around the kitchen table to eat supper, or just sipping on a cup of hot tea was an invitation to catch up on the latest hear how neighbors down the street were  doing.....

To talk about how the kids were doing at school and who finished their homework and who didn't, and what we're going to do about it......discussing what happened at softball practice...... finding out what everybody thought about the sermon the Pastor gave at church last Sunday.....wondering how that  old skinny stray dog was doing the local vet took in last week off the street, and gave him a new home.

And laughter!  Laughter being the music of the soul would rise and sing out above all the rest, and like a soft blanket of unified comfort, ease any hurt feelings or stress by bringing hearts back to  a sense of balance and awareness that they were loved and all there together for a reason.

It was a time of  open communication.  It was a kind of communion.

And it was time to give and take back the beauty of exchange between those we loved and cared unselfishness of the spirit that lent itself to the true meaning of life....that we're not just here for ourselves, but we're here to help, intermingle and serve others for the brief time we're allowed.

I thought about all that.  And as I broke the spell of recollection I was in, and looked up to see the hands on the kitchen clock had taken up yet another hour, it dawned on me that things have changed.....really changed. And not to my liking.....

Nowadays people don't gather around the kitchen table so much anymore.  Not like they did.  There's an isolation taking place that's hard to describe..... but it's easily seen.

iPhones, iPads, TV's and computer screens are in endless supply and have slowly, methodically stolen our attention away from what's truly important in life, and the communication and gentle lifestyle what we once had.

Electronic devices have become our conversation piece. They've become a robotic intermediary.....useful or not.  An electric pulse has replaced the human pulse. And the vital flow of emotion and information between one person to another is many times reduced to a line or two of text on an artificial screen.....or maybe a brief sound bite.

It doesn't need to be this way.  But it is.

I opened the kitchen window.  The sound of the seabreeze blowing and swaying through boughs of the tree nearby was enough to refresh my spirit.

The sight of birds flying overhead beneath the clear blue sky gave inspiration to the confusion I'd been feeling, and reassurance that it's all still really is....just as we'd left it twenty years ago.

Breathing deep, I turned back to stare at the kitchen table.  It was all still here. I could still hear the chorus and symphony of their voices. Some are now long gone to other places of the country .....others have gone to Heaven.

But the memory remains, and always will.

And so, let me leave you with this.  I think it sums it all up.......

"Take the best into your mind and only that.  Nurture it, concentrate on it, visualize it, prayerize it, surround it with faith.  Make it your obsession.  Spiritually creative mind power aided by God power will produce the best."

- Norman Vincent Peale
