Heat and MS... 28 May 2015

Well, it's that time of year again, when the days are getting longer and the sun
shines brighter and hotter in the sky.

For most people, the beginning of summer is a time to exhale and relax from
the ravages of Ol' Man Winter, and kick back just sitting by the pool or get out
and enjoy the great outdoors doing what they love to do in their spare time.

But wait!  Not everybody loves summertime quite like that.

No!  On the contrary, if you have MS, you can easily  find yourself dreading the
summer months....dreading the hot temperatures that go along with it, and that
rising thermometer staring back at you perched on the outside of your house is
not your friend.  It's an unwelcome reminder that you can't (or won't dare) go
outside, leaving  the safety and comfort zone of an air conditioned environment
behind.  The risk just isn't worth it.  (Believe me, I know all of this only too well).

OK.....so while we're on the subject, here's even more bad news.

By all accounts, meteorologists and climate scientists are telling us lately that
this summer it's going to be hot.....and they mean REALLY hot in many places
around the world.....so if they're right, and they're the experts afterall......and
it's going to be a blistering hot summer for most of us, then what are we to do?

Well......what we need to do is arm ourselves with the knowledge it'll take to
prepare for the coming hot weather and find ways to make the best of it.

So, here's an article I found that I think might shed some light on the subject....
.you probably know most of what's written here, but it never hurts to refresh
our memory and try to plan ahead.

I'll be sending you more articles and research papers on this subject for you to
look at, but this is a good place to start for now.

Here's the article.....

In this article:

Heat or high humidity can make many people with multiple sclerosis (MS)
experience a temporary worsening of their symptoms. Doctors believe that this
occurs because heat causes nerves (whose myelin covering has been
destroyed from MS) to conduct electrical signals even less efficiently. Most
people with MS avoid hot baths, hot showers, and heated swimming pools.

For reasons that are not well understood, extremely cold temperatures and
changes in temperature can also cause MS symptoms, usually spasticity, to flare.

Avoid extreme temperatures. Extreme temperatures may worsen your
symptoms of multiple sclerosis.

Avoid exercise on hot and humid days, and never exercise to the point of

Use air conditioning. If hot and humid conditions worsen your MS, try to stay in
cool and dry areas as much as possible. A home air conditioner may be tax-
deductible for some people with MS; talk to your doctor. Some people use a
cooling vest on extremely warm days.

It is important to remember that while climate may worsen the symptoms of MS,
climate changes do not produce more actual nerve damage. The adverse
effects of temperature and humidity are generally temporary. However, it can
take longer (a few days) to recover if you get overheated.
