MS: Kennedy's Story

My experience with MS began in 2005 when I developed several symptoms indicative of MS. The most frightening issue was temporarily losing my eyesight. I immediately sought medical assistance from a neurologist.

He scheduled several tests for me and my MRI was abnormal and displayed large plaques within my brain. The radiologist reported that there was a demyelinating disease process that given my age needed to be further investigated. The doctor told me that he could not make a diagnosis as he did not know what was wrong with me. He told me not to worry that maybe I had this condition my whole life. Additionally, he added perhaps you have too much white matter in
your brain.

There were times after 2005 that i did not feel well, but another neurologist attributed it to depression.

In the fall of 2014 I struggled with my ongoing cognition issues; I was extremely fatigued, etc. Finally, in January 2015 I went to the emergency room because I was feeling so sick and I knew something was very wrong. My new neurologist had me admitted to the critical care unit of the neurological center at the hospital. It was there that the doctors diagnosed me with secondary progressive MS. They told me that the MRI's from 2005, 2007, 2009, 2011, 2013 and 2015 were
clearly MS.

Furthermore, they said it should have been readily recognized as such in 2005.

At the present time, I am experiencing many symptoms that my new neurologist has prescribe many medicines for. He told me that we do not know what causes MS, there is no treatment for my secondary progressive MS and there is no cure. If I had been given medication in 2005 the first year it may have helped with the course of my disease.

Q: Most days I find myself...

A: trying to be positive about my condition and taking a very proactive approach to my life. I am currently participating in speech, occupational and physical therapy. I educate myself on MS and research what things would most help me fight this disease. I eat very healthy micro dense foods and do not eat any meat or dairy products. I am a vegan that strives to do my physical exercises every day and work on my cognitive skills. Always seeking what I "can" do in life and challenging myself to have the best quality of life that I can each day.

Q: Given what I know now, I would recommend others...

A: always take a proactive stance in your medical care and question everything about your care. Seek secondary medical opinions so you can see diverse vantage points. Take a family member or friend to your doctor's appointments to listen to what the doctor says. Be your own advocate on this journey.

Q: My life has changed in this way...

A: I hold everyday like a treasure never taking it for granted. Knowing I will never have this one day again, I seek to live life with gusto. I see the good in people, in situations and in life in general. Love to take the time to smell the flowers. All of the time realizing that my journey has brought me to this place for a reason. One day I will know what that reason is.

Q: When I'm having a bad day, I like to...

A: I love to cuddle up in bed and listen to great music, watch a movie or documentary and read an excellent book. Realize that despite my disease there are so many other people in the world that have worse life situations. I also like to help people through random acts of kindness. Paying it forward is the greatest experience of all.
