Irene's Story.....

Let me introduce Irene to you.  She's a gal with an indomitable spirit and a wonderfully positive attitude.......you're really going to enjoy reading her story. Here's Irene in her own words.....

Hello I'm Irene....mother to three, wife to one, caretaker to two dogs, two frogs and a dozen or so fish (though frogs and fish are very low maintenance so I'm not sure caretaker is accurate). I LOVE music and the ocean, reading, history, days when I have energy, COFFEE, COFFEE, COFFEE - thank you to my beloved Keurig (unofficial sponsor of  "Why Sure Irene Can Do That"),  Autumn and a dozen or so other things we'll refrain from listing for your benefit.

I was diagnosed with MS in Feb of '13 but had experienced symptoms for quite a few years before and just wasn't aware of what they were. When I was diagnosed my husband was very worried and upset so I tried to cheer him up and told him "Hey, it could be worse...it's not like it's a brain tumor." The following year after the next MRI they said well, actually you have a low grade glioma too. I think the neurosurgeon thought I must be mad when I started laughing. Then when I told my husband "Hey, it could be worse.....it's not like I have leprosy." he somehow didn't see the humor in it. Obviously a defect on his part, though I love him no less :)

Most days I find myself...walking as much as possible from the time I get out of bed until I crawl back in...sometimes it's around the house, other times its outside when the weather is kind and whenever the opportunity arises on the beach. And wherever I walk I've got music with me. I love reading but I have to limit that to shorter periods of time as I find reading while walking does NOT work well for me (kudos to those of you that have mastered that) and sitting too long makes my feet and legs uncooperative.

Given what I know now, I would recommend others...that walking constantly has really, really helped me with my leg pains and stiff/uncooperative feet/legs. Learn to say "No" if you're someone like me that apparently means to say "No" and "Sure no problem" comes tumbling out. I've really, really had to work on that because some days I can only get the basics done (feed children and animals and make certain the house is not on fire).

My life has changed in this way...in nearly every way. The two biggest:

  1. Because of the escalating cognitive/memory and fatigue issues I was having from the MS I was no longer able to perform my job accurately and at the required pace so we moved to SC last year from VA, which we lived in for over 20 years and I am missing it sorely but have adjusted (begrudgingly) . Since my husband works offshore he wanted to make sure we were close to family if I needed help while he was away and I have to admit there's much less stress and more flexibility to deal with my symptoms being solely a stay at home mom versus full time worker and mom. I think I keep Post-It notes in business single handedly, between them and reminder apps and notebooks (yep old fashioned paper and pen, just keeping a running list I can refer back to) it has helped me get a handle on things so I'm not constantly forgetting forgetting forgetting (except the things I'd like to forget....those things I'll likely remember until the day I die).

  2. I also find that I'm much less social than I used to be either because I'm just too tired to go do things -or- I want to avoid having people ask me how I am or what is wrong -or- because my balance, gait or strength is lacking -or- because sometimes I worry about my memory issues and don't want to sit with them and wonder the whole time "Did I already tell them that?....I have no idea.....I think I just meant to tell them that but haven't yet....I guess maybe I did already tell them and now I don't want to repeat myself....oh Christ on a bike I've no idea so I just won't say anything" Then of course that's met by "Hey Irene you're really quiet everything ok?" and the auto answer is "yeah, just tired". Anyone else get to play that game? It's ever so fun. When I'm having a bad day, I like to...go to the beach if possible. If not I like to listen to whatever music I'm craving at the moment - that changes from day to day and sometimes hour to hour. I also like avoiding people like the plague on those days. On my very worst days I just crawl off back to my pillows and comforter and alternate between sleep and staring out the window because there's not much other choice.

Irene, you have an amazing outlook on life and a marvelous sense of humor to help mask the difficulties you're facing with MS.  We need more like you, who are able to make us laugh, and appreciate the really important things in life. We salute you, and wish you the very best!

Enjoy!

Until next time,

Sue Ellen
