Every now and then I run across someone's MS story that really touches my heart.
And so it is with this one from ShopSmith, who brings us his heartfelt thoughts and feelings that I think we all can relate to......I know you're going to enjoy reading his story.....here's ShopSmith....
Well, this new journey started last spring. While going into work early, I slipped and fell. Thought at the time it was on the ice or stumbled in the snow. Got up, brushed off and went throughout the day. It was a long day, and later in the evening, I was unable to focus my thoughts or stay attentive. I figured I had a concussion, even though I couldn't recall hitting my head or anything major during the fall.
I had a conference out of town the next two days, so left that evening (drove 2+ hours) and met up with other colleagues. Just sat in the room and caught up to times passed. (Stayed up late - but I do not drink so did not feel that would have any effect on the next days.) Got up and attended the conference - felt tired but pushed through.
Later that evening at dinner, I was reconnecting with others from outside of the state and a few close friend. After about 15 minutes, I asked if I was making sense, as I was totally confused and trying to grasp onto ideas. One of my dearest friends said that I was making as much sense as usual. :) (I thought I was having a stroke) Typical man - went to the room and to bed early.
Got up the next morning and again darned tired. Got plenty of sleep. Went to session anyway. But then during the third seminar, I lost sight in my right eye. That's it - I was heading home. I had lost a dear friend just after Christmas and he was in my ear telling me to get to the doctor now.
So drove home and went to urgent care. They sent me to the hospital for testing. MRI's CAT Scans etc. They found nothing.Fast forward through three weeks with primary and referrals and get the news that it is probably MS. More testing and it is confirmed. It try to get on as normal but in early fall I hit the wall.
Took a leave of absence from work to reduce stress and concentrate on myself. It has been a roller coaster. There are days I feel guilty not working, as I feel like I always have. But then the new normal and bad days show up and remind me how harsh this disease is. Everyone tells me I look good - to which I respond in fun - that's funny for all the years I was healthy you never told me that, and now that I am ill you try to make me feel better?
Anyway - attitude is the key. Stay positive and get through the days as strong ad happy as possible. Keep the faith - we are being challenged to earn the ultimate rewards.
Most days I find myself...Trying to get around as normal and volunteer and assist others. Stay busy around the home and have taken up a few new focused hobbies.
Given what I know now, I would recommend others...Take each day as it comes. Get as much out of it as you are capable. Stay positive and share the Love. My life has changed in this way...I used to be well connected and social. The trials of the daily health have greatly reduced my connections. But I now know and realize those around me who were truly worth being connected with and are still there for me, and include and invite me. They also are understanding and compassionate when bad days are being had.
When I'm having a bad day, I try to make the best of it. Appreciate the things I am capable of, and keep my fingers crossed and hope tomorrow will be good. I believe Bad days allow one to appreciate the Good days.
ShopSmith, you are an inspiration to us all. You are open and candid with what's happened to you, and continues to happen to you. When you say "take each day as it comes"...."attitude is the key"....well, that sums it all up, and together with your positive attitude, and willingness to be open and connected with others around you is a sign of your courage and honor. We salute you. Stay as strong as you are, and never give up!
